Why is ‘pants’ plural?

Well the logical explanation would be that a pant is a leg of the pants or something. Yeah, that makes sense. A pair of pants isn’t two pants, but instead.. one pants (huh?).

Someone has to fill me in on this one. Pleaaaase.

  1. Because there used to be two separate tubes or pieces that were worn on each leg and then tied up at the waist. Eventually they became one garment but they are still called a pair of pants.

  2. Oh, whew! I’m glad I was late to the party on this one. You already have your explanation. I was ready to go into string theory to try to explain it to you, but no need… 😉
